INTRODUCTIONMedical Oncology is the fastest emerging field in the treatment of cancer (see below for details) and in most developed countries, it is recognized as a separate sub-specialty. In NWFP, the first Medical Oncology Unit was established in March 1999 at Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar in order to provide the best possible cancer treatment facilities to people from all over the province as well as neighboring countries at Peshawar. This is the first well-equipped Medical Oncology set-up in NWFP. This unit has the capability of treating patients with solid tumors as well as hematological malignancies. Separate isolation rooms with HEPA filters are available for the purpose. It is also training doctors as well as para-medical staff in this important specialty. Since March 1999, more than 800 patients have been treated successfully and this unit is emerging as one of the best Medical Oncology Units in Pakistan with referrals not only from all over NWFP but also from other provinces as well as from all over Afghanistan. Radiation therapy facilities as well as facilities for nuclear medicine tests and scans are also available in hospital across the road. Thus all treatment modalities have been provided for cancer treatment of the people of this province locally at Peshawar.
